At this time of year, one of the things that kids (and if we’re honest, adults too!) look forward to most is eating treats! Candy comes in many forms and premiere orthodontist in Arlington TN, Germantown TN, and the surrounding Shelby County area, Dr. Getman wants you to enjoy yourself, but not ruin your braces! He and the team at Getman Orthodontics created a comprehensive list of candies that should be fine for your child to eat and some that should be avoided at all costs!

Braces and Candy: What Can I Eat?

Some people think that wearing braces and candy don’t mix. We’re here to tell you that it simply isn’t true and you can absolutely join in on the fun, this season!

The Good

  • Chocolate – Chocolate is perfectly fine to be eaten with braces! It is (usually) soft and easy to chew, with limited potential to be stuck under wires or between braces. This also includes chocolate with soft peanut butter, but best to avoid chocolate mixed with whole or hard nuts.Ex: Original Hershey’s bar, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

The Bad

  • Hard Candies – Hard candies can be fine for braces, if your child chooses only to suck on them. Biting down can quickly and easily damage braces. Beware of hard candies!Ex: Jolly Ranchers, Lollipops.• Sticky Candies – Sticky candies get caught in (and on!) braces. This can be hard to clean off and can actually rip the bracket from the tooth and bend wires.Ex: Starbursts, Tootsie Rolls.

The Ugly

  • Toffees & Taffys – Toffee is a strange candy. It’ starts out somewhat hard and then becomes chewy. Both of these things are not good for braces. Ex: Heath bars, Laffy Taffy.

Other Foods that May or May Not be Okay to Eat with Braces

  • Popcorn – The kernels and hard pieces are dangerous for braces! It is best to avoid popcorn, at all costs!
  • Apples – Applies and similar fruits are perfectly fine for braces!

As an orthodontist in Arlington TN, Dr. Getman wants you to know that no matter what you eat, this holiday, be sure to take extra special care of your teeth! Brush regularly, if not more than usual, to ensure that you prevent cavities and from having food get stuck in your braces. See? Braces and candy can live in harmony! And, Getman Orthodontics wants you to remember to have fun!

Treatment with braces by Dr. Chris Getman of Getman Orthodontics is no longer associated with bulky metal bands on the teeth and awkward teenage smiles. Ceramic braces are a discreet and effective method of orthodontic treatment near Rossville, TN for those patients who want to straighten their smile without attracting a lot of attention while wearing braces. Ceramic braces are clear (or tooth-colored) and comfortable, and they still align your teeth effectively and give you the smile you have always wanted.

What are ceramic braces in Rossville TN?

Ceramic braces, also sometimes referred to as clear braces, are braces that are made of a clear or tooth-colored ceramic material. Dr. Chris Getman attaches these braces to the front of the teeth in the same way as traditional metal braces; each bracket is connected to a tooth and connected to the other brackets by a wire that is gradually adjusted to achieve the desired result.

Because of their material composition, ceramic braces are more fragile and they require a bit more care than traditional metal braces. Ceramic braces are permanent in your mouth for the length of your treatment.

What are the advantages of ceramic braces?

Ceramic braces offer many advantages over other orthodontic treatment systems. They provide a virtually invisible way to correct all kinds of orthodontic issues such as overbites and/or crooked teeth. And because they are made of ceramic and not metal, there is less chance of irritation in the mouth from the appliances.

Ceramic braces are more effective also at treating more severe orthodontic issues than Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign aligners are removable plastic trays that can be lost or carelessly applied. Ceramic braces are permanent and cannot be lost.

How much do ceramic braces cost?

Orthodontic treatment with ceramic braces near Rossville, TN can vary in price, but they often cost around the same as treatment with traditional metal braces. Dr. Chris Getman works with each patient individually to create a customized treatment plan that will work with each patient’s schedule, budget, and treatment goals. If cost is an issue, Dr. Chris Getman and the team at Getman Orthodontics can work out an individualized payment plan appropriate for the patient’s treatment. Getman Orthodontics also accepts a number of insurance plans that may help lessen the cost of treatment.

The costs of orthodontic treatment with braces can differ depending on the orthodontist and the patient, the amount of work which needs to be done, the length of the treatment, the insurance company, and the payment plan available. Dr. Chris Getman and the team at Getman Orthodontics treat their patients with a variety of approaches and methods. They can help you understand the expenses associated with braces near Lakeland, TN.

The average cost of orthodontic treatment in 1980 was about $2,000; or about $5,700 in today’s dollars. The national average for braces currently is $3,000 to $7,000. Today, there are more options than ever for orthodontic treatment, and each option has different costs and benefits associated with them. These options vary in cost due to the system type selected, how difficult the application and debanding procedures will be, your orthodontist’s rate, and the cost of materials.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the least discreet option but remain the most widely used method for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Chris Getman says that even though metal braces have remained the primary treatment option for several years, many patients of Getman Orthodontics now choose newer, less visible alternatives to traditional braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are affixed to the back of the teeth and are completely hidden from sight. They may be uncomfortable for some due to the tongue constantly pushing or rubbing against the metal. Lingual braces are by far the best option if concealment is a priority. These are usually the most expensive option with the national average price ranging from about $8,000 to $10,000. Know that your insurance provider may not cover this type of treatment.

Clear Aligners

Invisalign clear aligners are the preferred clear aligner systems on the market now near Lakeland, TN. These are great for teens and adults because of their low visibility and because they can be removed by the wearer. This allows for easy cleaning, brushing, flossing and eating. The cost of clear plastic tray aligners like Invisalign can average $4,000 to $7,500 nationally. However, they can be lost easily and may be costly to replace. Treatment time may be extended prolonged and they will not work for serious dental problems like malocclusions or crossbites.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces perform the same function as metal braces, and they are affixed to the teeth in the same way. However, their visibility is greatly reduced because they use either clear or tooth-colored brackets. The Getman Orthodontics team says that they are usually a little more expensive than metal braces, with the national average price tag between approximately $4,000 to $8,000.

Insurance

Consult with your insurance company as well as your orthodontist when considering orthodontic treatment with braces in/near Town. Many insurance companies won’t pay for treatment if the patient is over 18 years of age.

Dr. Chris Getman says that it’s possible for you to purchase additional orthodontic insurance if your health plan doesn’t cover braces. Make sure to ask about the percentage that they cover (a common figure is 50% with a $1,500 lifetime maximum per child). Know that if you change your insurance plan after the application of your braces, the insurance company may consider it to be a pre-existing condition, in which case the patient will have to pay out of pocket.

Folks with orthodontic problems in Arlington, TN can benefit from treatment by a professional orthodontist at any age. Your teeth are unique, just like you. Getman Orthodontics in Arlington, TN can evaluate your oral health care needs and provide you with the best orthodontic care available. Whether you are 7 years old or 50 years old, braces can help straighten and beautify your smile. After an initial consultation and assessment of your teeth and gums, Dr. Chris Getman will be able to discuss with you if braces are right for you.

When Is The Right Time For Braces?

While patients at any age can benefit from orthodontic treatment, there are a few specific ages where treatment is optimal, like after the last baby tooth has fallen out and all of the adult teeth have grown in.

By the age of 7 years old, children should see an orthodontist and get an evaluation to address any possible issues. From the ages of 8 years old to 14 years old, children’s head and mouth are still growing, which makes this a good time in life to correct any orthodontic issues.

Even after age 14, you can still benefit from an orthodontic consultation and treatment from Getman Orthodontics.

How long will I need to have my braces?

The question that Dr. Chris Getman is asked most often by prospective clients needing braces is, “How long do I need to wear braces?” (It depends on the individual patient’s case and their specific treatment). Most patients experience orthodontic treatments over a period of 18 to 30 months. A consultation with the team at Getman Orthodontics is the best indicator of how long your specific treatment may last.

Orthodontic treatment or braces can cause minor pain and sensitivity for a patient. It is important that parents explain to their children under age 18 what they may experience before, during, and after their braces are put on. And although wearing braces can be uncomfortable at first, they will get used to wearing them and their braces will become easier to wear over time.

If a patient participates in a sport that requires a mouthguard, or plays a musical instrument, make sure to speak with Dr. Chris Getman about playing while undergoing orthodontic treatment. You will learn quickly how to engage in your favorite activities with your braces.

Whether you are 7 years old with crooked teeth or 50 years old with an overbite, Dr. Chris Getman can administer the appropriate treatment for your specific needs and age group.

Braces can solve a variety of orthodontic problems (crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, open bite, etc.). Orthodontic treatment with braces from Getman Orthodontics help patients in Germantown, TN achieve perfectly aligned teeth, a better functioning mouth, and a beautiful, healthy smile. Most people know what braces do (they result in straight teeth), but many people really have no idea how braces work to do what they do. Dr. Chris Getman and the team at Getman Orthodontics want you to better understand how you can get that dynamite smile with braces in Germantown, TN.

How Braces Work

A little pressure goes a long way! Braces are comprised of several parts that work together to apply pressure to move the teeth, and they each play a specific role to help straighten the teeth. The brackets are the small square pieces that attach firmly to the front of the teeth. The brackets act as an anchor for the archwires. The archwires are the metal wires that stretch over the row of teeth. They help to guide the movement of the teeth, pulling them gently to the right position and order. The elastics or rubber bands, if they are indicated, are attached to hooks on the braces, and they work between the upper and lower teeth to achieve proper alignment. All of these components together allow braces from Getman Orthodontics to help patients attain straight teeth and better alignment.

How Retainers Work

Retainers are an important part of orthodontic treatment. Retainers work to keep the teeth in their proper positions. Once the braces come off, teeth begin to shift. Retainers stabilize the bones and gums so that the teeth stay firmly in their new positions. Retainers come in many shapes and sizes and can be removable or permanent. They may cause a small amount of discomfort as they place pressure on the teeth and gums, but this discomfort will ease with use.

How to Get These Appliances to Work for You

Now that you know how these orthodontic treatment systems work, you may be wondering what they can help in your situation. Straight teeth means that less food and bacteria can get trapped in between. And a truer, more functional bites contributes to the overall health of the patient.

If braces in Germantown, TN sound like they might be a good fit for you, set up a consultation with Getman Orthodontics. Dr. Chris Getman will meet with you to assess your specific needs and help create an individual plan of treatment with braces to suit your goals and your lifestyle. Dr. Chris Getman and the team at Getman Orthodontics near Somerville, TN are orthodontics experts and can help explain to you why you should always maintain good oral health by brushing and flossing your teeth while wearing braces.

We’ve all been taught about the importance of brushing and flossing our teeth, typically in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to sleep. But the one thing that you should never forget to do is clean your teeth properly, especially if you wear braces. While wearing braces, whether you’re a teenager or an adult, maintaining good oral health care, Getman Orthodontics helps ensure a successful treatment outcome.

Brushing and Flossing When Wearing Braces

With braces, food often gets caught in the brackets and wires, and then lingers on your teeth, creating plaque and tartar. These conditions can also cause serious and unwanted complications during your orthodontic treatment, such as:

  • Swollen gums
  • Cavities
  • Permanent stains on your teeth
  • Yellowed teeth
  • Bad breath

While wearing braces, not only is it important to brush your teeth multiple times a day but to brush them in the correct way. To get the best brushing results, make sure you brush your teeth and braces from every angle.

  • While brushing your braces on and around your top teeth, make sure to brush them with the toothbrush angled downward.
  • When brushing your braces on and around your bottom teeth, make sure you brush them with the toothbrush angled upward.

This helps to ensure that each tooth and every part of the tooth--the front surfaces, the chewing surfaces, and the back surfaces of your teeth--get completely clean. These techniques will also improve your brushing skills and give you a better cleaning treatment each time you brush.

Dr. Chris Getman stresses that cleaning your mouth, teeth, and braces effectively is an important part of your orthodontic treatment. If you don’t put the effort into your cleaning regimen while you are wearing braces, you may not get the outcome that you were hoping for: a clean, healthy, straight, white smile.

Flossing

Just brushing your teeth is not enough when you’re wearing braces. Flossing is a necessary (even if it’s a bit more awkward and difficult) and important step toward optimal oral health and the best orthodontic treatment outcome.

For people who wear braces, the Getman Orthodontics team recommends using a waxed floss. Some tools designed just for flossing are made with a stiff tip to reach food stuck under the wire of your braces. To be certain you are flossing effectively, remember these tips:

  • Thread the floss under the wire before passing the string between the teeth.
  • Rub the waxed floss up and down each surface of the tooth and don’t skip cleaning each and every gap.
  • Weave the floss through the individual gaps between the teeth (no blood should be seen. If you see blood, you may need to floss a little more gently).
  • Be sure to massage the gums with your toothbrush during brushing.
  • Finish things off with a good and thorough mouthwash rinse.

Both brushing and flossing your teeth properly are crucial steps in your orthodontic treatment with braces. You’ve already spent a lot of money on your braces to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. So why not maintain your oral health to ensure you get a healthy, beautiful smile?

Today, adults wearing braces make up about half of all orthodontic patients in the United States. It is never too late for an adult to attain a healthier mouth, straighter teeth, and a perfect smile. Dr. Chris Getman and the team at Getman Orthodontics are experts in adult orthodontic treatment near Lakeland, TN.

There is a general misconception that braces are worn only by children and teenagers. But, orthodontic treatments with braces have evolved considerably in recent years. Braces have become more lightweight and easier to install and remove. At Getman Orthodontics, adults are choosing orthodontic treatments with braces more and more frequently.

Why Adult Braces?

Misaligned or crooked teeth (malocclusions) affect our appearance and our self-esteem, and poor dental and oral health care can be a contributing cause to a number of adult-related health care concerns.

Improperly aligned teeth can cause problems chewing food, which may lead to gastrointestinal complications. Misaligned teeth and crossbites can trap food and increase the likelihood of plaque buildup. These conditions increase the chances of an adult patient developing gum disease and other more serious health-related complications (tooth decay, toothaches, earaches, and headaches). A crooked-toothed smile may also cause problems with public speaking, cause self-image concerns, and even prevent professional growth and advancement.

Dr. Chris Getman understands the reasons why an adult near Lakeland, TN may need to wear braces, and he helps each patient attain their treatment-outcome goals with sensitivity and compassion.

What are the Different Types of Adult Braces?

The Getman Orthodontics team offers a wide range of orthodontic treatment options currently available for adults.

  • Traditional Metal Braces: These are made of high-quality stainless steel, and many orthodontists feel that they are the most effective devices for straightening teeth, especially in cases where there may be severe misalignment. They often produce the desired treatment outcomes faster than any other type of braces.
  • Clear Ceramic Braces: Clear ceramic braces for adults are fitted to the front of the teeth and match the color of the individual’s teeth. Many people who want their braces to be less conspicuous, for aesthetic or professional reasons prefer clear ceramic braces.
  • Lingual or Concealed Braces: Lingual braces have brackets that keep them in place and are affixed to the back of the teeth. These braces are not outwardly visible.
  • Invisalign a.k.a clear aligners: Clear, easily removed plastic tray aligners that are ideal for adult patients with mild teeth-spacing issues. The clear aligners are able to be removed while eating, when brushing teeth, and when flossing. This is a healthy and hygienic choice for adults considering braces near Lakeland, TN. These braces are almost invisible and are preferred by people who feel self-conscious about appearing in public with braces on.

At Getman Orthodontics, Invisalign treatment is quickly gaining popularity and often a top choice for our adult patients.

If you have misaligned or crooked teeth, or just want to improve your smile, adult braces may be the right choice for you. Remember, there is no age limit for treatment for an existing orthodontic problem. The only way to find out what adult orthodontic treatment procedure is right for you is by scheduling a free consultation with Getman Orthodontics near Lakeland, TN. Most folks who are undergoing orthodontic treatment with Dr. Getman of Getman Orthodontics near Brunswick, TN don’t intend to make a statement with their braces. Then there are patients who do. If you are straightening your teeth with braces, why not spice them up a little with some color? Your orthodontist may offer different colored elastics that can be affixed around each bracket. They’re really called ligatures and are used to hold the archwire in place. They’re changed about every four-to-six weeks, so a patient can create a new look with each orthodontic treatment visit.

Tips for Choosing Colors
The common colors that patients choose for their ligatures include shades of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple. Gold, dark blues, orange, green, or purple can complement a darker skin tone. Light blues, dark purples, and dark shades of red or pink can complement a lighter skin tone. Darker colors can make your teeth appear whiter; lighter colors can give your teeth a yellow tone. Which colors compliment your eyes? What colors coordinate with the clothing that you usually wear? You can choose to combine colors for your favorite sports team or school organizations. The Getman Orthodontics associates say that some patients like to get specific color schemes for certain holidays like red and green for Christmas, or red, white, and blue for Independence Day. There are some colors that you may want to avoid, however. Black, brown, or dark green may mimic food stuck in your teeth and white can possibly make your teeth appear yellow.

What Do the Colors Mean?
Your color and your style is your choice. To express yourself with your braces, consider these colors and their meanings:

• Red symbolizes energy, strength, and determination. It is an intense color with high visibility, but it’s possible to use a lighter or darker shade to reduce this effect.
• Blue is often associated with depth and stability, as well as calm and tranquility. It is a masculine color that can create vibrant designs when combined with warmer colors like red or orange.
• Purple is associated with royalty, wealth, luxury, and power. It can also symbolize wisdom, creativity, or mystery.
• Green represents freshness, growth, and harmony. It can be associated with money or peace.
• Orange symbolizes joy and happiness. Orange is highly visible and can be used to make exciting color combinations.
• Yellow represents honor, loyalty, and cheerfulness. It also symbolizes intellect and energy. Just like red and orange, it’s a very visible color.

Now you’re ready to choose the colors of your elastics (ligatures)! Active patients can focus then on their game and also stay on schedule with their orthodontic treatment near East Memphis, TN. The professionals at Getman Orthodontics treat all their patients with the care and consistency that their lifestyles demand while ensuring the best possible treatment outcomes.

What do mouthguards do?

Mouthguards help prevent injuries to the teeth and jaws when patients get active in sports or physical activities. Many sports teams and leagues (football, lacrosse, and ice hockey) require mouthguards because they help keep the players’ teeth and mouth safe during their activity. When a patient has braces, mouthguards are even more important so the braces stay intact and do not break.

What are the different types of mouthguards available?

There are three main kinds of mouthguards that can be used by patients with braces near East Memphis, TN. These three kinds of mouthguards are

  • Stock Mouthguards: Stock mouthguards are inexpensive, come ready to wear, and can be bought at most sporting goods stores. Stock mouthguards offer the least amount of protection for a patient’s teeth and braces. They are a one-size-fits-all uniform fit and therefore cannot be adjusted easily. Some patients find them bulky and that they make talking and breathing difficult.
  • Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Boil-and-bite mouthguards mold to the player’s teeth and gums. To get a custom fit, a patient would heat the mouthguard in hot water to soften the thermoplastic material. The patient then bites down on the warm, softened mouthguard to mold it perfectly to fit their teeth and braces. Boil-and-bite mouthguards can be found at most sporting goods stores and, although they are a little more expensive than stock mouthguards, they are not prohibitively expensive.
  • Orthodontic Mouthguards: Orthodontic mouthguards are available only by orthodontists like Dr. Chris Getman. These mouthguards may be more expensive than the others, and they are customized to fit and protect the teeth and braces. Orthodontic mouthguards offer the most comfort and protection of any of these types of mouthguards.

No matter what mouthguard you choose, Dr. Chris Getman and the professionals at Getman Orthodontics want to make sure that your teeth and braces are fully protected during any kind of physical activity. It’s important to any competitor to perform their best on the field, diamond, or court, so make sure your braces are protected while you play.
